Dr. Irving Weinberg has worked in the Positron Emission Tomography field for over 20 years. His early career began as an experimental plasma physicist at the University of California at Irvine, working then as a postdoctoral scholar with PET pioneers Drs. Michael Phelps and Ed Hoffman. Dr. Weinberg eventually decided to cross over to the clinical field where he took his medical degree at University of Miami. He completed a radiology and nuclear medicine residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, working with pre-eminent nuclear physician Dr. Henry Wagner. Dr. Weinberg subsequently enrolled as a fellow in the fledgling Imaging Oncology program run jointly by Johns Hopkins and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. While at the NIH, Dr. Weinberg performed the first clinical studies using a PET scanner dedicated to breast imaging, and initiated other projects in breast-specific gamma cameras. He formed a company called Naviscan PET Systems, Inc. of Rockville, Maryland, to commercialize this technology (“Positron Emission Mammography”, or “PEM”), which was recently financed by venture capitalists. As a partner with IMAGIN Diagnostic Centres, IPT acquired the exclusive rights for PEM devices in Canada in 2005, along with non-exclusive worldwide distribution rights. Dr. Weinberg joined QMT, an IPT affilate, in order to promote molecular imaging on a global scale, and to assist IPT in its goal of improving affordable access to PET technology for Canadian citizens and abroad.
